The Stage-1 filter in our Undercounter Twin Superior Water Filter combines KDF, a compound of Copper and Zinc, and GAC (Granulated Activated Carbon) and works especially well on Chlorine taste and odors, while adding all the reduction-oxidation benefits of the KDF compound. The Stage-2 water filter, our WR001 (previously the CTU-1) 1.0 micron solid carbon block water filter, is the work horse for particulate reduction, chlorine taste and odor. Replacement Water Filters Stage 1: The water filter cartridge in the 1st stage of the WU002 twin systems utilizes KDF filtration media, GAC (granular activated carbon) and 3 stages of polypropylene sediment filtration. KDF Process Media are high-purity, granulated copper and zinc-based alloys that filter water through a process based upon the principle of redox (Oxidation-Reduction). Originally, KDF was shorthand for Kinetic Degradation Fluxion. We can explain redox like this: KDF Fluid Treatments unique combination of copper and zinc creates an electro-chemical reaction.
